Ilocos Norte continues to solidify its position as one of the Philippines’ key contributors to renewable energy growth, with wind and solar projects now powering communities while supporting the country’s clean energy transition.

The province is home to several of the country’s most significant renewable energy developments, including the 51.9-megawatt (MW) Bangui Wind Farm, the 150 MW Burgos Wind Farm, and the three (3)  Wind Farms in Pagudpud with a total power generation of 311 MW — home to the largest onshore wind project in the Philippines—and the two (2) Solar Farms in Currimao with a total of power generation 103.3 MW, These investments have positioned Ilocos Norte as a major player in the national shift toward sustainable energy sources.

Ilocos Norte’s achievements align with the objectives of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001 (Republic Act No. 9136), which seeks to promote competition in the power sector, encourage the use of indigenous and renewable energy sources, and ensure affordable, reliable electricity for all Filipinos. The province’s success in attracting clean energy investments directly supports EPIRA’s goals of reducing dependence on imported energy and strengthening national energy security.

Renewable energy generation in Ilocos Norte is primarily driven by wind turbines and solar panels, harnessing the province’s abundant natural resources. Power generated is transmitted via high-voltage lines to the national grid and distributed to consumers through local utilities such as the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative. This sustainable electricity powers homes, businesses, schools, and public facilities across the region, offering environmental benefits alongside reliable service.

Ilocos Norte’s growing renewable energy sector not only diversifies the country’s energy mix but also creates new opportunities for local employment, investment, and innovation. The province’s leadership demonstrates how local initiatives can play a critical role in meeting broader national and global sustainability targets.
